Actuators

The heart of hydraulic brake systems

An actuator is a key piece of almost every trailer with a hydraulic braking system.   Located at the front of the trailer the Actuator holds the reservoir for the brake fluid as well as usually functioning as the Coupler connecting the Trailer and Truck together.  In some cases trailers may use an Electric over Hydraulic Actuator, a system which allows an electric brake controller to control a hydraulic brake system.

When identifying an actuator you should focus on the following key details.

Who made it?

A direct replacement from the same manufacturer of actuator will always create the smoothest replacement.  When that isn't an option we'll use our expertise to recommend the closest possible alternative.  Most actuators have their manufacturer name and model # stamped into the metal somewhere.  Though thick paint and road wear can make finding them a challenge.

How does it attach to the trailer?

Actuators are typically bolted onto the trailer tongue or alternatively welded on.  When bolted the size and spacing of the bolts can be instrumental in making sure your replacement fits.

How does it attach to the truck?

The most common actuator connection is a fixed height Ball Coupler in either 2" or 2 5/16".  Other options include a fixed height lunette eye for pintle connection or a C-Channel allowing multiple attachment and height options.

With electric over hydraulic systems the actuator does not serve as the coupler.
