The tongue jack is important for getting your trailer disconnected from your tow vehicle, and supporting it when not in use. When selecting your replacement jack an important detail is how the jack attaches to the trailer. Jacks will typically be attached near the front of the trailer either on the side of the tongue or through the center of an A-Frame. When mounted to the side of the tongue many jacks have a mechanism which allows them to be rotated by 90 degrees to keep them away from the ground while the trailer is being towed. Most lighter duty jacks are bolted in place either through a center plate (often connected to the coupler) or via brackets which grip the tubing of the trailer frame. Sometimes a Jack's bracketry is welded to the trailer frame, and sometimes the jack itself is welded directly and solidly to the frame.
Another important detail to note before replacing a Jack is whether it is a Top Wind or Side Wind jack. A top wind jack features a handle mounted through the top of the jack which is spun in wide flat circles. A side wind jack has the jack handle protrude from the side of the jack, rotating in vertical circles. There are pros and cons to each type of handle. Top wind jacks feature a much simpler mechanism, which in turn makes them more durable and less prone to wearing out. Sidewind jacks more complex internal mechanism makes them slightly easier to turn in many cases, and their orientation can be useful if a large toolbox or short tongue doesn't give the jack enough space for a top wind handle to freely revolve.
At Trailer Tech we stock jacks with ratings all the way from 1200# up to 12000# tongue weight. At the low end of that scale some of our jacks come equipped with or can be outfitted with a Caster Wheel allowing repositioning of the unloaded trailer without a tow vehicle.
